In Missouri, we have had four executions this year, and to what benefit? I am writing to you today to let you know that I am concerned about the death penalty and how it is being used in Missouri for several reasons:

• There is no evidence of decreased homicide rates (or an increase in public safety) in actively executing states. In fact, Missouri ranks 2nd in the nation in highest homicide rates per capita, 
• Missouri is one of two states that allows for one judge to impose a death sentence over a jury of peers, 
• For every eight people executed, one person is exonerated, innocent people are executed, 

I care about justice for victims and maximizing the use of our public safety dollars. The death penalty is an expensive government program that does nothing to improve public safety.  I’d like to learn more about your thoughts about the high use of the death penalty in Missouri.

This is an issue that is important to me; where are you on the issue?

• We got it wrong; the death penalty system is entirely broken.
• The system works but needs improvements.
• The system works every time.

The death penalty system in Missouri is a failed and bloated government program that does nothing to bring justice to victims or ensure public safety. We need to do a full audit and invest our public safety dollars in programs with real results.
